As a Nation We Put People to Death

In which Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's sentencing hearing touched off another round of America searching its soul or searching for a soul, whatever

I live in a state where our penitentiary's death-row was grandfathered in as future ones were proscribed. I can't tell you if New Mexico may yet execute because emotions run high around cop killings, and the timing of some prosecutions may yet allow a closure-seeking family and the bloodlust of a pissed-off mob to prevail. (If I were David Sirota, this paragraph would be 10 times longer and a hundred times more informative.)

Lest I hyperspazz out on the keyboard without proper who, what, etc., I should predicate.

That silly man with the cable credential, Chris Matthews, was on the Sunday show that his network/parent holding company assembles on a meetly basis, and he declared to be torn now that such a clear cut guilt had been established. He thought he was anti-DP but now he doesn't know. (It reduces one to Yahoo or YouTube commenter and all its concomitant ignorability.)

Speaking as one who has needed to steer high school sophomores toward Mr. Yoda from Mr. Yoghurt (because the cool sub) there is no but in this instance. Only yadda

When you oppose the death penalty because you cannot tolerate, as a member of society, the mistakes, you are aware of the sliding scale of certainty which beyond a reasonable doubt still allows at the margins of true certainty, and you know from frequent confirmations with DNA evidence running contrary, or just recently with vigilante crime labs just saying anything, that only an absolute refutation of the death penalty will ever suffice.

No do. No fail. Yadda.

And saying to yourself just this once says this to me. It says you are another okay with the death penalty person who was searching for a position that didn't burn so much from the inside.

Faking reflexes is no one's forte and the one that tips off your tolerance for death penalty oopsies, turns out, is harder to conceal than the one which cries out how you sold your soul, true, but that will just have to wait for the book.

(Dude - movie? Really?)

As a nation we still put people to death.

New Mexicans included. No wiggle room.

In the sense that we invade.

We put war billions off budget and straight to the debt.

We torture.

We, in any senses of any words, execute people.

We, the people.
